Listen

October 2011 interview with Marieke Schuurs on the topics of Alexander Technique, Bodymapping and teaching singers and public speakers. Individual Sessions

Bodymapping brings awareness to the mind in order to effect change in the coordination of the body for all kinds of activities, including playing an instrument, singing, athletics, public speaking, bicycling, etc.  Individual attention is often the best and most effective way to accomplish this learning process.

A complimentary consultation with Marieke, in person or on skype, is encouraged to assess your needs before starting individual sessions.  Call or email to set up a time.

Workshops

Body Mapping 101 - A workshop format is an effective way to bring bodymapping to larger groups of interested students.  An added bonus is that the students are able to watch the learning process of the other participants as the new information creates changes in individual coordinations.  A workshop can be directed to a specific activity, such as playing a particular instrument or a particular sport.  It can be a full day experience or a one or two hour "taster" experience.  It can be brought to your location.

NEW!  On-line workshops - Interested in an on-line Bodymapping class? A class is currently being set up for Summer 2012.  Please email for information.

What is Body Mapping?

Your "bodymap" is your mental perception of yourself, usually based on your kinesthetic awareness and on outside feedback.  If your perception has inaccuracies, then your coordination will reflect those inaccuraciesThis magnified by long term-repetitive movement, such as found in playing musical instruments, dance or athletics.  The result can be chronic issues such as:

  • carpel tunnel syndrome
  • rotator cuff injuries
  • knee and hip joint pain
  • neck and throat tension
  • breathing issues
  • back pain

Bodymapping does not cure an injury once it has occurred, but targets the coordination that causes the injury in the first place.

Bodymapping developed out of Alexander Technique as an informatinal means of correcting misperceptions

It is taught with anatomical information on slides and with models, movement exploration and discussion.
