"Understanding the Movement of Singing"
bodymapping instructor at Cantare Voice Studio. Marieke has been teaching singers since 1986 and Bodymapping since 2003. Marieke's specialty is to encourage awareness of the process of singing, through an understanding of what is happening in the body. She is particularly known for her expertise in teaching breathing. She has also worked with instrumentalists and public speakers. More information on Marieke, her training and background, can be found via the BIO tab at the top of the page. Cantare Voice Studio has been open in Eugene since 1996. The atmosphere is relaxed and yet focussed. Individual instruction proceeds at the student's pace and level. Over the years, a wide range of performers have found what they needed at the Studio: classical singers, musical theater singers and actors, classical and folk instrumentalists, songwriters, jazz singers, recording artists.

Testimonials "Studying with Marieke Schuurs removed the constraints on my natural singing voice. In a few months, we had worked out a lot of the literal kinks in my voice, my posture and breathing had improved and I enjoyed singing more. We added four notes to the top of my range and solidified the ones on the bottom. I now sing with the voice I was given, and in a relaxed, more free manner.” D. Petty (classical singer) "Marieke has taken me to a level beyond my expectations. I am deeply appreciative of her talent and experience, and look forward to where she will take me. I now even have confidence to do solo work. D. Haverstock (community singer) "I have been studying voice for over six years now, including two years as a vocal performance major. Somewhere along the line, I developed some serious vocal problems. However, after studying with Marieke for only a few months, not only are the problems I acquired over the years disappearing, but I've made the delightful discovery that things that I thought were permanent flaws in my voice were just bad technique. With each lesson my voice becomes more reliable. Now, instead of worrying about what is wrong with my voice, I can't wait to findout what it's going to do next! I love to sing again. That's definitely one of the best gifts anyone has ever given me." K. Clabby (classical singer)

Mission Statement Cantare Voice Studio strives to provide an excellent mental understanding of and physical training of the voice and breath for singing and speech based on a clear understanding of how the body is structured and how the mind learns. How we started... Cantare Voice Studio of Eugene, OR., was started in 1997. It began simply as a private studio for singers who wanted to learn voice technique. The focus of the studio’s approach was to develop the coordination for singing as naturally as possible. This involved integrating body awareness training for the development of breathing technique (Andover Educators) with the most current information on how the voice worked (University of Iowa, Voice Research Institute/Voice Care Network). As the studio expanded, classes and workshops were added to meet the performance training needs of the students. Where we are now... The primary focus of Cantare Voice Studio is still the private lesson; a one-on-one teaching experience. The goal is to prepare each individual to the best of their ability to move on into their field of endeavor or into a more extensive training program. Where we are going... Our goals for the future are to improve and expand the quality of the training we offer to stay current with the demands of the vocal performance industry and to create a non-profit, scholarship foundation for young, talented performers. |
